Good Reader Strategies 

Before Reading 

  • Look at the title and any illustrations to anticipate and predict what the text will be about. 

  • Is it about something or someone I already know? 

  • I is about something new I am learning? 

  • Consider your purpose for reading. Am I reading for entertainment or for information? 

  • Will I read to enjoy a story about characters? 

  • Will I read to learn how to do something? 

  • Will I read to discover interesting facts?

During Reading 


  • Do I understand what I am reading, and does it make sense? 

  • Do I slow down, and read some parts again? 

  • Do I understand the meanings of words? 

  • Use fix up strategies 

  • Read on 

  • Backtrack 

  • Use context clues 

  • Make substitutions 

  • Does the words sound and look right? 

  • Use fix up strategies 

  • Sound it out 

  • Look at beginning sounds
